Lucky to find a pet friendly landlord

I rent a house in Sydney with my four kids and three pets, including Roxy, our 6-year-old Great Dane cross Greyhound; Macey, a 1-year-old Bengal cross Tabby; and Tony, a rescue Cockatiel.

Roxy is a lazy goofball, but also a gentle giant. And Macey is so good natured and very playful. We rescued Tony when he flew into a party, so not sure his age. All we know is he is a loud, annoying and fearless bird with a lot of character.

I’ve never not had pets in my life. Pets make the family feel complete. The love and devotion Roxy, Macey and Tony give towards our family is endless.

As a tenant, I always feel that when I move I won’t get the house I want because I have pets. Having more pet friendly properties available relieves our stress and worry when house hunting.

When I recently moved out of my own home to a rental, I wanted to stay in the area, but it was important to find a fenced property. It was never a consideration to give up our pets for a house so I would have kept looking, even out of our area, for a pet friendly house.

I was lucky I got the first place I applied. The advert for the property did not say if it was pet friendly or not, so it was the first question I asked. Luckily, the landlord was happy to accommodate pets! Our landlord also had a medium-sized dog so when I mentioned Roxy to him, he didn’t hesitate to let Roxy continue to be the inside dog she is.

My one concern was that even if the advert stated pet friendly, most real estate wouldn’t allow animals inside. I was also worried someone else’s application would be chosen because they didn’t have pets. We were fortunate not to face any challenges.

What could have made our house hunting experience better was for houses to be advertised as pet friendly so I could know straight up. I would never give up my pets for a house because it’s then just going to be a house and not a home. I would have just kept looking and looking until I found a pet friendly rental property.

It’s unfortunate that sometimes you have to make sacrifices so you can keep your amazing pets.
